Diabetes means blood sugar stays too high, either because the body makes too little insulin or cannot use it well. Type 2 is by far the most common kind in Bangladesh and often causes no symptoms for years, so many people only find out from a routine test. Thirst, passing urine often, tiredness and slow-healing wounds are the classic signs.
Expect a fasting blood sugar or HbA1c test (which shows your average sugar over about three months), a blood pressure and weight check, and usually kidney, cholesterol and urine tests. Later visits add eye and foot checks. Bring your glucose meter readings if you have them.
Get emergency help for very high readings with vomiting, deep fast breathing or drowsiness, or for low sugar (sweating, shaking, confusion) that does not improve after eating or drinking something sugary.
