Piles (haemorrhoids) are swollen veins in and around the back passage, and they are very common. They can bleed bright red onto the toilet paper, itch, or form a lump that comes out after passing stool. An anal fissure (a small tear that makes passing stool sharply painful) and a fistula (a small channel that leaks pus near the anus) are often mistaken for piles.
The doctor asks about your bowel habits and bleeding and examines the area, often with a short scope (proctoscopy) in the chamber itself. If you are over 40, the blood is darker, or your bowel habit has changed, a colonoscopy may be advised to rule out other causes.
Go to emergency care for heavy bleeding, bleeding with dizziness or fainting, a very painful hard lump that will not go back in, or fever with severe pain and swelling around the anus.
