The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that sets the pace of the body. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) tends to cause tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold and dry skin; an overactive one (hyperthyroidism) causes weight loss, a racing heart, sweating and shaky hands. A swelling or lump in the neck is another common reason to see a thyroid doctor.
A blood test for TSH, often with T4 and T3, is the starting point. A lump or swelling usually needs a neck ultrasound, and sometimes a fine-needle test of the lump. Bring earlier thyroid reports and the names and doses of any thyroid medicine you take.
Seek urgent care for a neck swelling that makes breathing or swallowing hard, a very fast or irregular heartbeat with a high fever or confusion, or severe drowsiness and feeling very cold in someone with a known thyroid problem.
