The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that sets the pace of the body. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) tends to cause tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold and dry skin; an overactive one (hyperthyroidism) causes weight loss, a racing heart, sweating and shaky hands.
